Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil

Oil CG-friendly Tree-nut derived

A medium-weight oil from the kernels of the Moroccan argan tree. Adds shine and softness and tames frizz; nut-derived.

About Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil

Argan oil is pressed from the kernels inside the fruit of the argan tree, which grows mainly in southwestern Morocco. It is rich in oleic and linoleic acids and contains natural antioxidants such as tocopherols, which help it stay fresh.

On hair, argan oil is a medium-weight emollient. It smooths the cuticle, adds shine, softens dry ends and helps control frizz, which is why it shows up in finishing oils, leave-ins and heat protectants. It absorbs into the hair surface more easily than heavy oils like castor, so a few drops rarely look greasy.

One caution: many products advertised as 'argan oil' treatments are mostly silicones such as cyclopentasiloxane and dimethicone, with a small amount of argan oil near the end of the list. Check where it sits on the label if you're paying for argan.

Who tends to love it: almost everyone, including people with relaxed, silk-pressed or color-treated hair who want shine without heaviness, and curly hair that needs frizz control. People with very fine, low porosity hair should use a drop or two at a time.

Argan comes from a kernel, so we flag it as nut-derived for people with tree-nut allergies. Refined cosmetic oils usually contain little protein, but if you have a nut allergy, ask your doctor and patch-test first. Argan oil is approved for the Curly Girl Method.

How our checker rates it

ModeRatingWhy
Curly Girl OK No concerns for this mode.
Relaxed hair Good Softens and helps seal in moisture.
Low porosity Good Lighter oil — less likely to weigh hair down.
Protein-sensitive OK No concerns for this mode.

Ratings assume it is listed near the top of the label. After the first preservative or fragrance (likely 1% or less) most cautions soften.
