Interactive Hair Length Chart

This hair length chart shows where every level lands on your body — from chin to tailbone. Pick your height, drag the slider, or check where extension lengths will fall.

Length levels move down your back as height goes up.

Shoulder length (SL)

3″ to armpit length

Measured stretched from the crown. If your curls shrink, your hair looks shorter than this — the level still counts by stretched length.

How to use the Interactive Hair Length Chart

  1. Choose “My hair” or “Extensions”

Use “My hair” to see where your own length falls, or “Extensions” to check where a bundle, wig or braiding hair length will land.

  2. Pick your height

Choose your height in “Your height”. Every length level — shoulder, armpit, bra-strap, waist — sits lower on a taller frame.

  3. Drag the hair length slider

Set “Hair length (stretched)” to your length from the crown to the ends. The silhouette updates and the result box names your level and how far it is to the next one.

  4. Check an extension length

On the Extensions tab, set “Extension length (as sold)” and the texture. Wavy and curly hair hangs a little shorter than its sold length.

  5. Share it or plan your next step

Copy the link to save this exact chart, or tap “How long until I reach my goal?” to open the growth calculator with your length filled in.

How it works

Hair length levels are named after body landmarks — shoulder, armpit, bra strap, waist — so they describe where hair falls, not just a number of inches. This hair length chart turns those landmarks into measurements and scales them to your height.

How length is measured

We measure from the crown — the top of the head — down the back to the ends, with the hair stretched straight. That is the convention used by most length charts and hair-growth challenges. Some people measure from the front hairline over the top of the head instead, which adds a few inches. Either works for tracking your own progress, as long as you always use the same method.

Why height matters

The levels are drawn for a 5′4″ (163 cm) frame, close to the average height of adult women in the U.S. On a taller body every landmark sits further from the crown, so the same 18 inches that reach bra-strap length at 5′4″ only reach the armpit at 6′0″. The chart scales each level in proportion to the height you choose. Real torsos vary — a long neck or a short waist can move a landmark by an inch or two — so treat the numbers as close guides.

Stretched vs shrunken

Curly and coily hair shrinks as it dries, often to half its real length or less. Levels always count the stretched length. If you wear your hair curly, it is normal to be at bra-strap length on paper while your wash-and-go sits around your shoulders. To check, gently stretch one section at the back, or measure after a blow-out or silk press.

Extensions

Bundles, wigs and braiding hair are sold by their straightened length. Straight and body-wave hair hangs at about that length when the top wefts start near the crown. Wavy and curly textures hang shorter — as a rule of thumb we take off about 10% for loose and deep waves and 20% for kinky-curly hair. These are estimates; check the seller's photos for the exact pattern.

Inches and centimeters

One inch is 2.54 cm. Use the unit switch above the chart to see every level in centimeters; extension lengths stay in inches because that is how they are sold.

Frequently asked questions

What is APL hair length?

APL means armpit length: stretched hair that reaches the bottom of your armpit at the back. On a 5′4″ frame that is about 15 inches (38 cm) from the crown; for most people it falls somewhere between 14 and 16 inches depending on height.

How many inches is bra-strap length?

Bra-strap length (BSL) is about 18 inches (46 cm) from the crown on a 5′4″ frame. Taller people usually need 19–20 inches to reach it, shorter people 16–17 — use the height setting above to see your number.

How long is 16-inch hair?

Straight 16-inch hair falls just past armpit length on an average 5′4″ frame, about two inches above bra-strap length. Wavy or curly 16-inch bundles hang shorter — closer to the armpit for loose waves and nearer the shoulders for kinky-curly textures. Switch to the Extensions tab to compare.

What length is mid-back hair?

Mid-back length (MBL) sits between bra-strap and waist length — about 21 inches (53 cm) from the crown on a 5′4″ frame.

How do I measure my hair length?

Use a soft tape measure. Hold the end at your crown (the top of your head, where hair often grows in a swirl), gently stretch a section at the back of your head and measure to the ends. Coily hair is easiest to measure damp and stretched, or after a blow-out. Measure the same spot the same way each time so the numbers are comparable.

Does shrinkage change my length level?

No. Length levels are always based on stretched length. Shrinkage changes how long your hair looks day to day, not the level it has reached. Coily hair can look half its stretched length or even shorter.

What is the difference between hip, tailbone and classic length?

Hip length (HL) reaches the widest part of the hips, tailbone length (TBL) reaches the bottom of the spine, and classic length is where the backs of the thighs begin. On a 5′4″ frame they are roughly 30, 34 and 38 inches.
