Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil

Oil CG-friendly Heavy

A rich, oleic-acid-heavy oil that softens and seals in moisture. Often listed among oils that can partly penetrate hair, though evidence is weaker than for coconut.

About Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil

Olive oil is pressed from olives and is made up mostly of oleic acid, a monounsaturated fatty acid, plus smaller amounts of other fatty acids, squalene and natural antioxidants. It has been used on hair for centuries and is a staple of many textured-hair products and kitchen-cupboard routines.

On the hair, olive oil is a rich emollient. It coats strands, adds softness and shine, reduces friction during detangling and slows water loss, which makes it a classic sealing oil and hot-oil treatment. It is frequently mentioned alongside coconut and avocado as an oil that can partly penetrate the hair shaft, but the evidence for olive oil is much thinner than for coconut, so think of it mainly as a surface conditioner.

Who tends to love it: people with thick, coarse or high porosity hair, people with dry relaxed ends, and anyone who wants a budget-friendly pre-poo or sealant. Who may find it heavy: people with fine or low porosity hair, where it can sit on the surface and look greasy or attract dirt. A few drops go a long way.

Olive oil is approved for the Curly Girl Method. Extra virgin olive oil keeps more natural antioxidants but has a stronger smell; refined and 'pomace' grades are milder. PEG-modified olive esters are water-soluble derivatives that rinse out more easily.

How our checker rates it

ModeRatingWhy
Curly Girl OK No concerns for this mode.
Relaxed hair Good Softens and helps seal in moisture.
Low porosity Caution Heavy ingredient near the top of the list — can sit on low-porosity hair and build up.
Protein-sensitive OK No concerns for this mode.

Ratings assume it is listed near the top of the label. After the first preservative or fragrance (likely 1% or less) most cautions soften.

What oil ingredients do

Plant and synthetic oils that soften, add shine and slow moisture loss. Some (like coconut) can enter the hair shaft; most coat the surface.

This one is on the heavy side, so it can weigh down fine or low-porosity hair if it sits near the top of a product’s list.

It is one of the oils able to enter the hair shaft rather than only coating the surface.
