Hair weather in Chicago

Based on daily weather records for 2016–2025, the average dew point in Chicago ranges from about 19 °F in January to about 65 °F in July. In a typical year that adds up to roughly 83 days with a frizz-risk dew point (60 °F or higher) and 135 days of dry air (below 35 °F).

Frizz season runs July and August: in July, about 84% of days sit at or above 60 °F. That is when silk presses revert fastest and glycerin-heavy stylers tend to puff. Humidity-resistant gels, anti-humidity sprays and protective styles carry you through.

Glycerin-friendly weather (35–60 °F dew points on most days) is most common in April through June, September and October. Those are good months for humectant leave-ins and glycerin-based gels.

November through March are usually dry: the air pulls water out of hair, so seal with an oil or butter, choose richer leave-ins and use glycerin sparingly.

If you are planning a silk press, February, March and December have historically had the fewest frizz-risk days in Chicago. Check the live forecast above before your appointment — individual weeks can differ a lot from the average.

The live forecast above uses the same scale as the table below: under 35 °F is dry air, 35–60 °F is hair-friendly, 60–65 °F brings frizz risk and 65 °F or more means high frizz. Read more about how the scale works on the dew point hair forecast page.
