How to use the Hair Product Inventory

  1. Add a product to your shelf

Enter the product, an optional brand, its type and size, then press “Add to shelf”.

  2. Mark it open or unopened

Choose “Open, in use” or “Unopened backup”. For open products, set how much is left with the slider or the ¼, ½ and ¾ buttons.

  3. Add price, store and restock level

Open “Price, store and restock level” to track value and choose when a product should go on your shopping list (25% by default).

  4. Update levels on wash day

Tap ¼, ½ or ¾ on any product in “On your shelf” as it runs down. Mark backups as opened when you start them.

  5. Shop from your list

The shopping list shows what’s low and has no backup. Copy it as text or download the PDF. Your data stays on this device.

How it works

A hair product inventory list stops two expensive habits: buying a third bottle of something you already have, and running out of conditioner on wash day. This tool keeps that list for you and turns it into a shopping list.

1. Add what’s on your shelf

For each product, enter the name, an optional brand, the type and the size. Mark it as open or as an unopened backup. For open products, set how much is left — the ¼, ½ and ¾ buttons are quicker than measuring.

2. How the shopping list works

An open product lands on your shopping list when it drops to its restock level (25% unless you change it). If you already own an unopened bottle of the same product — matched by brand and name — it stays off the list and is marked “backup on shelf” instead. The list is sorted emptiest first and can be copied as text, grouped by store, for your notes app.

3. Value on the shelf

If you add prices, the tool multiplies each price by the share still left (unopened backups count in full) and adds it up. It’s a simple estimate, but it makes a crowded cabinet visible in dollars.

4. Duplicate warning

When two or more products of the same type are open at once — say, three leave-ins — you’ll see a note. Each opened product has its own shelf life after opening, so finishing one before starting the next keeps them fresher. Pair this list with the expiry tracker if you want dates.

Privacy and limits

Everything is stored in this browser on this device. Clearing your browser data deletes it, so export a backup from time to time. Levels are what you enter — the tool can’t see your bottles — and value is based on what you paid, not current prices.

A typical core hair product shelf

Routine step Product types How many to keep
Cleanse Shampoo (sulfate-free for regular use) and/or co-wash; a clarifying shampoo for monthly build-up 1 open + 1 backup if you wash weekly
Condition Rinse-out conditioner with plenty of slip for detangling 1 open — it runs out fastest
Deep condition Moisturizing mask; a protein treatment if your routine calls for one 1 of each at most
Leave-in Water-based leave-in conditioner or spray 1 open
Seal & style Cream or butter, oil, and a gel or mousse for hold 1 of each type you actually use
Heat days Heat protectant (silk presses and blow-outs) 1 — check the date if you rarely use heat
Edges & extras Edge control, scalp treatment Small sizes; these often outlast their freshness

A starting point, not a rule — your routine may need fewer or different products.

Frequently asked questions

How do I keep track of my hair products?

List each product once, with how much is left and whether it’s open or a backup. Update the level on wash day — it takes seconds with the ¼, ½ and ¾ buttons — and let the shopping list tell you what to buy before you run out.

How many hair products do I actually need?

Most routines run on a short list: a cleanser, a conditioner, a deep conditioner, a leave-in, and one or two stylers such as a cream, oil or gel. Extras like a clarifying shampoo or heat protectant depend on how you style. The table on this page shows a typical core shelf.

Is it bad to have several products open at once?

Not harmful, but every opened product starts its own clock. Having three leave-ins open means some may spoil before you finish them. The tool warns you when more than one product of the same type is open.

When should I buy a replacement?

By default a product goes on your shopping list at 25% left, which usually covers the time it takes to shop or ship. You can change the level for each product — set it higher for things you can only buy online.

What is “value left on the shelf”?

It’s the price you paid multiplied by the share still in each bottle — a rough idea of how much money is sitting in your cabinet. Products without a price aren’t counted.

Is my product list private?

Yes. It’s saved in your browser on this device only — nothing is sent to us and there’s no account. Use “Export backup” to keep a copy or move it to another phone.
